Professional Bio

Kenneth Miller is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in Time, Life, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, Discover, Aeon, and many other publications. His book Mapping the Darkness: The Visionary Scientists Who Unlocked the Mysteries of Sleep, was published in October 2023 by Hachette.

Ken has reported from four continents on topics including science, medicine, culture, criminal justice, religion, and the environment. He enjoys telling the stories of brilliant outsiders—most recently, in fields like neurobiology, immunology, and cancer research—who pursue extraordinary goals despite overwhelming odds. He has served as a contributing editor for Discover, West Coast editor of Reader’s Digest, a senior editor at People, and a staff writer at Life. He was also a senior writer for Our Times: The Illustrated History of the 20th Century (Turner Books, 1995).

Ken has a master’s in journalism from Columbia University, where he won the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship for his thesis on New York City’s underground punk rock scene. He plays harmonica and keyboards, and lives with his family in New York’s Hudson Valley.
